So, now I've decided to read Cry, the Beloved Country. Hey, as long as I'm in the depressing book mode, I might as well keep at it.

Well, That Was Depressing
I just finished reading Cold Mountain. Jen, you did not tell me it was a depressing book! Not that I didn't enjoy it, I did. It just was pretty sad and dark and depressing throughout and then the ending, well, I can't talk about the ending in case some of you readers haven't read it yet.

Just in case you were wondering. I'm typing this while laying in bed with a warm (hot) corn bag on my feet and another one laying next...
Barb, Cry,The Beloved Country is a great book. I read it years ago (maybe 40) when South Africa still had apartheid (sp?. It is very sad, but at that time a very eye-opening book. Let me know what you think. Mom
ReplyDeleteMom,
ReplyDeleteI think I read it also when I was a teenager. I can't remember if I read it or Too Late The Phalarope (it's sequel) or both. I figured since I can't really remember, I should read both of them again. I picked this one up at a garage sale this summer for a quarter.
Interestingly, Don't Cry was written BEFORE The policy of apartheid was formally in place. The introductions (there were many) to the book were very educational on S. African history and Alan Paton.
Ta ta,
Barb
I read both of them also, so I might be confusing the stories in my mind. They both are good books. I have limited my reading here to murder mysteries. I just read the one selected for the January book club -- They Did It With Love, which was quite good. I did not expect the ending. Mom
ReplyDeleteSorry. Most good books are depressing. Cold Mountain was one of the first novels where I didn't feel driven by plot to know what was going to happen next. It felt like a journey, and I enjoyed it for that. Also, the butter the size of a squirrel's head on the steak really stuck with me.
ReplyDeleteI also really liked "Cry, the Beloved Country". The Lord used that novel to convict me of anger. Let me know when you finish it, and I'll tell you more.
Jen,
ReplyDeleteYes, I would agree with you about most good books being depressing. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Cold Mountain and yes, it is more of a journey than a story.
My kids kept asking me what it was about and it was hard to give them an answer by way of a story line. I kept saying, well, it's about two people and what's going on in there lives at a given time. Needless to say, it didn't sound very interesting to them :)
Jean, I will always make your book selections a priority as you have not steered me wrong yet! I miss our Wednesday night talks :)
