States of the Week

Okay, I know you can generate more enthusiasm about helping my kids learn their geography!
We have finished New England and moved on to the Mid-Atlantic States.  This weeks states are
New York and New Jersey.

Anyone have some interesting tidbits about either of those??  I don't think I have any readers from either of these states, so if you've ever lived there, traveled through there, or read about them; please share your wealth of knowledge :)

  1. There are 11 lakes in the Finger Lakes region. Seneca Lake is the deepest at 618 ft.

Susan B. Anthony was tried for treason in the Ontario County Courthouse. She was fined $100.00 for voting in the 1872 presidential election. She refused to pay.

Milk is the official state beverage.

I love visiting the Finger Lakes region.

  2. Ok, Barb, I think you must've forgotten about your New York Friend!

Here's my fact -- and it connects us both!

"The Erie Canal, built across NYS in the 1820's opened the midwest to development and helped NYC become a worldwide trading center."

We live in "Lockport" -- home of the famous "locks" of the Erie Canal. Check it out!

  3. Oh, Jean, you're right! I completely forgot that you lived there. Oops, sorry! Thanks for the valuable information. Maybe we should take a field trip out to visit you - do you want some visitors this week?
