Wind in the Willows

Okay, it wasn' t wind in the willows as we have no willow trees, but it was a whole bunch of wind in the oak trees and the maples and the ash... Apparently a very serious thunderstorm swept through our neighborhood today. I say apparently because we weren't home. The kids and I went down to Rochester to spend the day with Raelea's birth family. We went to a wonderful park/zoo near them and had a picnic, hike and visit to the zoo all in one day. It was sweltering hot, but we had a nice time until....the sirens went off. Then we all went into the visitor's center and waited for the storm to pass. A lot of wind and then a torrential downpour (while we ate ice cream at the DQ) and that was that.

When we got back to our neighborhood, we noticed a LOT of branches down and the closer we got to home the worse the damage was. When we pulled on to our block we saw a very large tree down at one of our neighbor's house. Talking to our neighbors across the street, they too lost a tree in their yard and a couple large branches. I was almost afraid to take a look in our backyard. Thankfully, all of our trees remained intact, losing only small branches. We then spent the next hour and a half picking up storm debris from our yard and listening to the chainsaws buzzing at neighbors' houses. We finished the day by burning all the dead wood that fell out of the trees today.

And now, the picutres...
First from the picnic.
When the sirens went off we all had to wait in the visitors' center.  They brought out a snake for us to pet.  All the kids pet it except Marcus, who was scared spitless of the thing.

After the park we had treats at Dairy Queen.

Then it was home again to clean up the yard.

And lastly, time to burn up the debris.  Way to go, Evan, multi-tasking by watching the fire and practicing your chanter.  Remember Scotland 2010!

  1. Marcus might not have liked that snack, but he seemed rather happy with his DQ treat!!

  2. Yes, the Mr. Misty went over great! Marcus doesn't like ice cream (how can someone NOT like ice cream), but he liked his Mr. Misty!

  4. I suppose that when you see a snake in Ethiopia, are taught to head the opposite direction, not to pet it.

You missed quite a storm. 15 or 20 minutes of wind. When you look out and see branches flying horizontally in the air, you know it's time to hit the basement.

Our newly transplanted pine went down, but Terry pulled it back up and staked it. So far, so good. Glad you didn't have any major damage.

  5. Linda,
Yes, I am sure Marcus has had some experiences with not-so-harmless snakes. I don't like the things either.

I am glad we weren't home for the storm as I think it might have really scared the kids. Sorry to hear about your tree. Bummer. Hopefully, it will be okay. Growing up our Trees seemed to tip over on a regular basis and we always pulled them back up and tied them. One tree we left tied so long that the trunk grew around the rope.
