So! If you've been inkling to hear Evan play his bagpipes, here is your chance! Wayzata High School is doing Brigadoon for their fall musical, and they have hired Evan to be their bagpiper.
Their performances are November 10-12, and 17-19. I believe all performances are at 7:30 pm.
So, if you happen to be hanging out around Wayzata, Minnesota, this weekend or next; longing to hear some bagpiping, you should check it out :-)

Sweet Victory!!!
Congratulations to the Minnesota Police Pipe Band (MPPB) Grade 3 for winning first place at the Chicago Scots Highland Games this past weekend!!!!
This was a significant win for the band for several reasons. First, MPPB was competing against Macalaster College Pipe Band and Chicago Celtic and both bands had defeated MPPB earlier this season. The other two bands are very good and they played well on Saturday. While MPPB Gr. 3 has only seven pipers, both Macalaster and Chicago Celtic have at least 12 each. Having a smaller number of pipers has some advantages, but it does mean that each and every piper will be heard by the judges, so if one person makes a mistake it WILL be noticed.
Also, according to "band historian" Pari, this was only the second time MPPB Gr. 3 has won at Chicago since 1987.
Despite what we told the Macalaster folks, the win was NOT a result of playing Pop Goes the Weasel on the chanters during the seven hour drive to Chicago. The main reason I am so happy about the win is that I know how hard these pipers have worked to get to this point. The pipers have been having group practice three times a week- every week - for months. That, in addition to their individual practicing and lessons, means hours and hours and hours and hours of practice. Many of the pipers also competed solo at Chicago, so they had to be preparing for those competitions as well (coming away with two 1st place, two 2nd, and three 3rd). They have worked so VERY HARD for this win!!
Also note, that aside from Stephen, whose age I don't know, the average age for the pipe corp is 18! Mark, Stephen, Joel, Evan, Abby, Alex and Ian, you guys are ROCK STARS!! Thanks also to the supporting drum corp of Galen, Laurie, Erin, Rob, Sally and Mark.
Special thanks to Mark Lucas for being a great Pipe Major and to Stephen Elias for being an amazing teacher to many of the young pipers!!!
Without further ado, here is what the band was doing at 4:00 on Saturday....
And here is what they were doing at 7:00 on Saturday....

Job well done!!

On The Road Again
I just can't wait to get on the road again....
Tomorrow I'm off for another road trip to see a great band perform. The Minnesota Police Pipe Band will be competing at Chicago Scots Highland Games this weekend. Since I am playing chauffeur for four of the seven pipers in our Grade 3 band, I guess I'm driving the tour bus :-)
Instead of the Middle-Aged Mom's Road Trip, this is the "middle-aged mom takes a bunch of young people on a road trip." I can't wait! I love spending time with these "kids" and I LOVE watching them compete and perform. If you happen to be in the Chicago area, come on over to the competition. You, too, can be an MPPB groupie! I promise you there will be some great piping on Saturday.

And So It Began
Bagpipe competition season, that is. Saturday was Evan's first competition of the season - the Minnesota Scottish Festival & Highland Games. I wish I could say it was a glorious day, but in all honesty, it was quite miserable - cold, windy and rainy. I was dressed in numerous layers, including long-underwear and wool socks and I was still cold. I can't even imagine how cold the pipers and drummers were in their kilts, etc. When they competed they were in shirt-sleeves (it's easier to play the pipes if you don't have a suit coat on).
Anyway, Evan had a wonderful time in his solo competitions and he came away with first places in the piobaireachd and the jig and a second place in the strathspey reel. He scratched his 2/4 March because his pipes weren't working properly (a problem in the cold and rain). All in all, he had an excellent start to his solo season. He is competing in Grade 3 this year, a grade level higher than last year.
The band, on the other hand, had a bit of a harder time. The Grade 3 band had pipe problems (due to the inclement weather) and some health problems with some of the members, so they did not perform well. They were scheduled for two competitions, but they scratched the second one because they did not have enough pipers who were able to perform :-(. This was particularly discouraging because they have been practicing a ton and, under normal circumstances, they are quite good. The Grade 4 band, however, did well and took home a second place medal.

When not competing, this is what the band members looked like! Looks like fun, doesn't it?

Fun Things To Do
If you're wondering what to do tomorrow and you live in Minnesota, I encourage you to come on out to the Minnesota Scottish Fair & Highland Festival. I can't think of a better way to spend a rainy, 51 degree Saturday than standing outside and listening to bagpipes! Actually, the weather is supposed to be lousy, but it's the first competition of the season and I wouldn't miss it for anything.
Hope to see you there!
Hope to see you there!
Winnipeg Is Off
Bummer! Evan, Aidan & I were supposed to be going up to Winnipeg this coming weekend for the Winnipeg Scottish Festival. Evan was going to do some solo competitions there, but the main reason for going was so the quartet that he is in could compete. There are no quartet competitions here in the states, so they need to go to Canada if they want to compete. I was VERY much looking forward to hearing them play and taking a little road trip, but alas, it is not to be.
The other three guys in the quartet have all been battling head colds, and head colds and bagpipes do not mix! They don't want to go if they are not playing their best, so the trip is off :-( Evan could still go and do his solo stuff, but it just isn't as fun without the others, so he has opted to stay home.
On the positive side, Evan (and the rest of the quartet) can now join the band at the Scottish Ramble in St. Paul. This is always a very fun event! So, if you're looking for something Scottish to do on Saturday or Sunday, come on down to the Landmark Center in St. Paul! The band will be playing at 4:00 (I believe) on Saturday and there will be a "special treat" around 5:00 on Sunday.
So, Winnipeg is off, but the Ramble is on! Hope to see you there!
Remember - "Nothing's Cooler Than Kilts in February!"

Burns Night
This weekend was chock-full of good times. After the lovely date with my hubby on Friday night, Evan and I enjoyed a Burns Night celebration with his band. For those of you who are not familiar with Burns Night you can read my previous post on the event. This was MY first Burns Night celebration. In 2009, Evan and Chris went while I stayed home with the rest of the kids, so it was my turn this year.
I mostly wanted to go so I could hear Evan do the Immortal Memory of Robert Burns toast, hear Evan's quartet play (for the first time in public, and not just in our living room) and so I could dress up and act adult-like again (two days in a row!). It was a very nice evening with a great group of people!
One important part of Burns Night is the Toast to the Haggis (which Kathleen performed excellently, no easy task since it's not in modern English. I actually haven't the foggiest idea what was said about the haggis, but she did a great job at it!)

Now if you've never had haggis it's.....well, it's....like a giant liver sausage/pate (I know, sounds tasty, doesn't it?)

This was my first experience with haggis and by all reports, this was a very poor representation of haggis! It was NASTY! Not to be easily deterred though, I will try it again....maybe in a few years.
Evan's toast went over well and the quartet ROCKED! I can't wait to hear them compete in Winnipeg!!!
Here's a picture of the quartet after their performance. They were exhausted, but pleased with how it went.

Gotta go. It's Monday morning and the little people are wanting breakfast! So much for my adult-like weekend, I'm back to being Mom :-)

Piping Results
The final results for the 2010 Bagpiping Competition season have come in. I know you all have been waiting with bated breath for this moment. Here's how it all shook out for the year.
Minnesota Police Pipe Band Grade 3 (Evan's band) took Champion Supreme honors for the second year in a row. Yay, MPPB!
Evan took first place for Grade 4 6/8. Playing with pneumonia in St. Louis was worth it, according to Evan.
Evan's friends and fellow band members did as follows:
Joel Sarapas: Grade 3 - 1st Strathspey/reel, 1st Piobreachd, 2nd 2/4 March, 5th Jig
Abby Peterson: Grade 4 -Champion Supreme overall, 2nd 2/4 March, 3rd 6/8, 3rd Piobreachd
Alyssa Gregory: Grade 3 - 2nd Jig
Ian Elias:Grade 4 - 3rd 6/8
Ian Peterson: Tenor drum - Novice Tenor 1st, Group Tenor 1st
Wayne Sanford -- Drum Major 2nd
Sheila Loucks -- Drum Major 3rd
Way to go Evan, Joel, Abby, Alyssa, Ian, Ian, Wayne, & Sheila! You guys rock! Can't wait for 2011 season to begin. It's going to be AMAZING, just wait and see!!
Now you can all go about your daily lives without wasting hours each day wondering, "How did the MPPB do this year?"

Random St. Louis Pictures
Evan came home from St. Louis with two medals and a fever; I came home with a cold and fever. SO, not feeling up to too much talk here right at the moment, but I thought I would post some pictures of our little jaunt down to Missouri.
The first night there the kids had an 11 PM drumming sessions.
Then on Sat. morning it was off to the Games.
Alex & Abby
They were like little vultures waiting at the table for their results :-)
Evan & Abby showing off their medals.
Alex & Nina
This was unusual for a Highland Games. They had an eagle and hawk doing some free flying.
After the Games we went downtown to the Arch. For some reason all the kids felt the need to touch this mannequin's hand
Even when not bagpiping, it is never far from their minds....
Alex, Evan & Abby at the top of the arch. They felt the need to call Joel (who didn't come with us because he was sick) from the top of the arch and tell him their results.
Evan and his cousin Maggie.
Isn't this a cool picture ?
Alex & Evan managed to sneak in a game of checkers at the store under the arch.
And here they all are. It was SUPER windy and cold, so my subjects were not too patient getting their picture taken.
Then there was some down time.
So what do pipers do on a nine hour car trip? Well, for at least three hours of it they did this. For the non-bagpiping reader, they are playing their practice chanters. They had fun doing "Are You Sleeping" in rounds and then they moved on to doing such classics as "Donald Willie and His Dog" and "Scotland the Brave" in rounds.
Well, That Was...Fun?
We came, we played, and we....conquered?
What was supposed to be sunny yet cool morning here in St. Louis turned into a rainy and windy morning :-(. Despite the foul weather, Evan and his two friends, Abby & Alex, each competed in three solo events this morning. Once again, despite my dire prediction of doom and gloom and Evan's pneumonia, we are coming home with medals :-)
Evan took second in piobaireachd, a second in 6/8 march and a sixth in 2/4 march. Abby took third in 2/4 march and Alex took fourth in 6/8. This was their first performance without their wonderful teacher there to tune them...and the judges sheets reflected that ;-)
After changing into street clothes we took the kids to the Arch and now we're chillaxin' at Kathy's. It's been a good day!

He's Back, I'm Leaving
Don't worry, I'm not leaving BECAUSE he's back :-)
Chris just returned from 3 days in Chicago (work conference) and tomorrow I leave for St. Louis for, you guessed it, a bagpipe competition AND to visit my sister, Kathy. This IS the last competition of the season! Definitively! Of course, that's not counting the one in Winnipeg in February....
I am driving down to Missouri tomorrow with Nina, Evan and three of his friends who are also competing. Of the four bagpipers, only two of them are healthy, so we'll see how they end up doing. I'm not thinking we'll come home with as many medals as they usually do from these events. Although the antibiotics are starting to make Evan feel better, his fever came back yesterday after he practiced his pipes :-( Playing bagpipes is REALLY not the rest that the doctor called for, but he's hardly practiced in the last two weeks so he feels like he needs to get some practice in before Saturday. Pneumonia and bagpipes really don't mix very well we're discovering.
My sister is generously opening up her house to have us all stay there a couple nights. Thanks, Kathy!! She and my niece are going to come to the highland games with us, which will make it more fun for me since Evan spends the time tuning, competing or hanging out with his friends.
I'll try to post the competition results on Saturday, but if I don't have time you'll have to wait until I get back home. Oh, and of course, there will be pictures. Have a great weekend!

Defeat Of Jesse James Day
So, we went to the Defeat of Jesse James Day Parade in Northfield yesterday, as Evan's band was marching in it. The whole family came along to watch the parade which is always more fun than me sitting there by myself.
We were sitting alongside the road and some of the reenactors rode by on their horses,
which prompted Marcus to ask why they were riding by and carrying guns. This lead to a discussion on what the parade was for - what were we "celebrating". Do you have any idea how strange it sounds to a six year old that we are celebrating the death of an outlaw some 100+ years ago by having a parade? He couldn't quite grasp why we held a parade because Jesse James was killed. It was quite humorous :-)

There's No Place Like Home!

It was great to sleep in my own bed last night, instead of this...

And it's great to look out my window and see my own yard and woods, instead of this....

It is also nice not to have to THINK really hard about which way to look before crossing the street and not to have to read the coins before paying someone :-)
The trip will be forever etched on my heart, but I am SO, SO very glad to be home with my family!
I'm Here
We made it to Scotland without any delays! We did learn a few things on the way though.
Here's what I learned today:
Icelandair has NO free food or snacks on their flights :-(
The Iceland airport has almost no food in their terminal and the food they have is outrageously priced and quite nasty
Even though your plane is only stopping in Manchester and then continuing on to Glasgow, you must still de-plane and go through security before getting back on the same plane and continuing your flight
University of Strathclyde does NOT have wi-fi, but a nice little restaurant a block away does
It's a long walk from the Buchannen (sp?) Street station to the U of Strathclyde when you are pulling and carrying all your luggage
They have Aldi's in Glasgow! Very good news indeed
You should NOT pack powdered chai tea mix in your suitcase in a Tupperware container whose lid may come off during travel and get chai tea powder over all your clothes
Sixty-two degrees is quite warm when you are in Glasgow and walking everywhere, particularly up four flights of stairs with all your luggage
I can park a car for free in a lot right next to campus
Most places in Glasgow take Visa
There you have it. A few of the things I've learned since leaving Minnesota 18 hours ago. I'm sure tomorrow will bring many more lessons :-)

Book Clubs, Band Party and Boundary Waters Packing
That pretty much sums up my weekend.
Nina and Molly had their first book club meeting on Saturday morning. Hopefully, this will encourage the literary bent in them. They didn't actually discuss a book this time though, so it was more like "Nina & Molly have four friends over." I'm sure next month will be more book related :-)
Last night, we had the bagpipe band over for a little get-together after the Lakeville parade. It was a grand time with good friends and good food. The mosquitoes were especially happy with their food, as well.
Today, it was time to pack our Duluth packs for our trip to the Boundary Waters. Nina, Molly and I leave bright and early on Thursday morning for our little adventure into northern Minnesota. It should be a great time and yet another opportunity to feed the mosquitoes.
Hope you had a great weekend as well :-)

Today's Lesson
It's good to learn something new every day and as a homeschool mom I feel like it's my duty to teach my kids something whenever and wherever the opportunity presents itself. Well, today we drove to Winona to do the Steamboat Days parade and then it was off to LaCrosse to enjoy an afternoon with some band friends. Driving through south eastern MN affords the opportunity to talk about glaciation and other geological facts. We also talked about the locks and dams on the Mississippi. You know, normal homeschool stuff.
Well, then there was that wonderful opportunity to teach the kids how to respectfully and remorsefully talk to a state trooper when you are caught speeding on a lovely stretch of highway south of Winona. They learned valuable lessons like: always have your driver's license with you, carry proof of insurance in your car and the ever important, thank the nice officer for letting you get off with only a warning.
It was a highly educational day for my kids.

Winona Steamboat Days Parade
This is a shout out to my extended family in the Winona area. Evan and the band are playing at the Steamboat Days parade on Sunday. Come on down if you want to hear him play. The parade starts at 12:30 and they are near the beginning of the parade (#5), so you'll have to be there at the beginning. Aidan & Nina are going to be carrying the banner and I'm doing water duty, so it's kind of a family affair :-)
Yippee!!!
yippee |ˈyipē; ˌyipˈē|exclamationexpressing wild excitement or delight.
That pretty much sums it up. Wild excitement and delight :-)
I did it! I FINALLY booked our flight to Scotland. We're going to Scotland!!!! I'm off to wander the hills and dales...Ahhh....I CAN'T WAIT!!!
