Music Monday

I think this is a perfect song for 2020.

It's been a hard year - personally and communally - but even in the midst of all the pain and suffering, God is still sovereign, loving, and kind.

Musical Monday

I feel like Monday is a good day to post lovely music, so hear is a link to a truly beautiful song.  Enjoy!

Ashes by Tender Central

Happy Birthday, Shakespeare!

Today, as you probably already know is William Shakespeare's 450th birthday!  So to wish happy birthday to the Bard I thought I'd play you a little Mumford & Sons....but first a few little Shakespeare quotes to prep your brain for the song...

From Much Ado About Nothing:

BENEDICK
Serve God, love me and mend. There will I leave
you too, for here comes one in haste.
or
BALTHASAR :
Sigh no more, ladies, sigh no more,
Men were deceivers ever,
One foot in sea and one on shore,
To one thing constant never:
Then sigh not so, but let them go,
or
BENEDICK:
 In brief, since I do
purpose to marry, I will think nothing to any
purpose that the world can say against it; and
therefore never flout at me for what I have said
against it; for man is a giddy thing, and this is my
conclusion.

NOW, you are ready to listen to the song....

Happy birthday, Will! Thanks for enriching our lives in SO many ways!

Memories Were Made, Feet Were Frozen

Sorry for the delay in getting you the detailed description of our concert adventure! Lack of sleep, post-concert depression, and adult responsibilities all prevented a post concert post.  They did not prevent me from uploading my concert pictures to Facebook, however! If you care to, you can view those photos here.

For those that care for a somewhat detailed account of our adventure, here you go...

We got to the venue around 3:00, and discovered that there were about 40 to 50 people in line already, despite the 25 degree weather.  This was only temporarily disheartening, as we were aware of something that the people in line were not, that being that the venue opens doors on two sides of the entrance and the doors are fed from two different line.  Sooooooo, we promptly and without great fanfare, started line #2 on the adjacent side of First Avenue, thus placing us at the very front of the line.

The lesson in that story is: know your venue, folks!

It was cold!!  We had a few "band member sightings" while waiting in line.  We high-fived Kyle as he walked by, and I got a wave out of Dan when he discovered we spotted him across the street. I also spoke about five words to Kyle when he was locked out of the venue and came to our door to try to get in...poor guy! My dear, sweet hubby brought us coffee, and by us, I mean, half of the people in the line.  We made lots of friends :-) Did I mention it was cold?

When doors finally opened at 6:00 we made a dash for the barrier and secured prime spots there.  Can I just say once again, it was cold out?  We were so happy to be inside a heated building, oh, and being at the barrier was pretty sweet as well.

Opening act was To Kill A King, and they were great.  They put on a great show.  Bastille came next and they did an amazing show!  If you go to my FB pictures you can see the set list, which was tossed to us after the show.

While the concert was over quite early, we stuck around for a looooong time, hoping to get pictures with the band.  Unfortunately, they never came out.  We discovered the next day that they were next door in The Depot, and if we had gone in there we could have chatted with them.  Live and learn, I guess.

It was a great time! Just to prove it, I will leave you with a video someone made of the song Poet.  I was SO happy that they sang it, as it is one of my favorites!  To get your bearings, I was directly in front of the two drums to Dan's left.

Why?

Way back in January when I bought tickets for the April 1 Bastille concert, I imagined April first being sunny and around 60.  Perfect weather for waiting in line to get the front row at a concert.  It could have been....

Now that it's April 1, I see the reality of April in Minnesota.  Like some cruel April Fool's joke, it is snowing and in the 20's with a nasty wind to boot!

Will we still wait in line to be at the front? Yup!

So, you might ask, why do I do such a crazy thing?  Why would a 48 year old mom freeze her fanny off to see a band with her kids...and other people's kids? Why did I drive 11 hours in September and stand in line in 102 degree weather to be at the barrier for Mumford & Sons? Why do I do all the crazy things I do?

Maybe I read too much G.K. Chesterton.

Say what?

Well, I was reading a book of his a few years ago, and the premise of it was to live while you're alive.

We're each given about 80 or 90 years here on this earth.  They go by fast, I hear.  The problem is that many people stop living long before the lid closes on the casket.  Everyday life sucks the life right out of living.  We're all breathing and our physical heart is beating, but is our heart still beating?

I want to taste and experience life, not just pass through it on the way to the grave.  I want to make memories for myself, for my friends, for my family.  To quote Ben Howard,  "I've come to know that memories Were the best things you ever had."

So, to experience life today, I'll freeze on a cold sidewalk. I'll stand at the barrier to see Bastille. I'll sing loudly. I'll jump up and down. I'll stay up way too late.  And I will make memories.

Work Avoidance

Okay, so I'm supposed to be prepping for teaching my biology class tomorrow, but before I do that I thought I'd give you a few things to listen to.

I've got another band for you (no big surprise here).  They're called The Intermission Project, and here are a few tunes from them. First up is my favorite song of theirs...

And this one just went up today, and I love it!

Listen and enjoy, and I will go back to lesson planning.

I Warned You

I warned you in my last post that I might subject you to more music today....and so I will!  This song has been stuck in my head all day, so now I will proceed to get it stuck in your head as well!

You're welcome!

Music

Hey, guess what?  I'm going to write a post about music!  Big surprise, I know!

Actually, I am not going to "force" you to listen to any of my favorite music today.  (well, maybe later, but not right now)

I've been thinking lately, that for someone who obsesses as much about music as I do, I don't really listen to it all that often.  Seriously!  Many days (most?) I don't listen to music at all.  I play music (on my dulcimer or French horn) almost daily, but just listening to it....it just doesn't happen as much as you'd think. How can that be?

I've determined that it comes down to one thing.  When I listen to music it is an all-consuming activity.  It is not something to have going on in the background and, heaven forbid, it's certainly not something to hold a conversation over.  When I listen, I want to really connect with the lyrics, the voice or the drum line (yes, I'm a drum fanatic, too).  It's not just an aural experience for me, I want to "feel" the music.

Living in a house with nine people means there is precious little uninterrupted time in my day, thus precious little music-listening time.

There you have it.  A music post with no music in it.

It's Almost Friday

Which means it's time for some good music!

I'm in a Bastille mood, so I'll share two of my favorite Bastille songs.  The first one is Poet, which I find thought provoking...

Then we have the Weight of Living, Part 2.

"Do you like the person you've become?"  There's a thought to think about :-)

Something to Make You Smile

Wednesday is the perfect day to watch a new Castlecomer video, methinks.

A Little Mid-Week Music

A little Castlecomer to brighten up your week.  Here they are with a mash-up of a Matt Corby song and a Haim song.

Start the Weekend Off Right

Nothing like a little Bastille to get your weekend off to a great start!  Trust me!

Memories Made

So.....many....emotions!

I'm home.  Back from that little festival I went to.  After an amazing weekend, great music, precious little sleep and 12 hours in the car, I'm a little emotional.

Instead of a weepy, reminiscing post I will sum up the weekend in some short phrases or words - each one has a story (stories) behind it, each one carries a precious memory of my time in Guthrie...OH!  now I've done it, I'm crying....

Okay...

Here's the list...

  1. Sisters of the Road (Oh, man, I'm crying again!)
  2. Hugs!
  3. Ivan
  4. HOT

FINALLY, I got to hug some of my Sisters of the Road!!  Notice the intensely happy face!

Graffiti was encouraged, so we obliged (thanks to Ben for the fine artwork!)

  • More SOTR arrived the next day!

Molly & Ben doing the festival thing in Guthrie.

    Sunrise at the queue.

    Waiting for gates

Barrier spot secured.  LOOOOONNNNNGGGGG wait in the heat.  Ice in a bottle is a glorious gift!

Notice how much happier they look now that the sun has set!!!  It's almost Mumford time!!

As I've said before, it doesn't matter if there are 100 people or 30,000 people at the concert if they're all behind you!  And yes, there were 30,000 people there.

Just about the only decent picture I got of M & S.  I'm lousy at taking concert pictures and I would MUCH rather just enjoy the show.  And enjoy it I did...thoroughly...even though I had just seen them three days prior...and no I am not obsessed....okay, maybe just a little bit....

    Oh, one last thing....
    it's mine now :-D

  • SIsters of the Road Trip

I have been woefully negligent in keeping you all up-to-date on the impending road trip to Guthrie, Oklahoma.  I hope none of you have lost any sleep wondering if I was, indeed, still going to trek 11 hours south to hear some bands play.

Rest assured the road trip is still on.  I have just had precious little time to blog about it, what with school starting and all.  Sending two girls off to community college for the first time, and then today sending Aidan off to the public school for the first time, I have been a busy little beaver.

Oh, and then there's that little concert thing I'm going to here in St. Paul tomorrow...

Let's not forget teaching my first science class at co-op tomorrow, as well.

And prepping for school to start next Monday here.

And Meal planning for Chris, so that they have things to eat while I'm away.....

Yeah.  It's been a little crazy around here.

I will probably be out of touch of the blog until I arrive back in Minnesota on Sunday. :-(  Sorry about that.  It's hard to blog from my ipod, and there will be no internet at the campground, I'm sure.  I will try to post stuff on Facebook and Instagram as the opportunity arises, but if you don't hear from me, just rest assured that I am having a GREAT time.

And, oh, the stories I will have to tell upon my return!

    Ta ta!

The Things We Do For Love

Well there's "walking in the rain and the snow, when there's no place to go..."  But not today.

The things I did for love today consisted of.....

Paying a little visit to the Xcel Energy Center.  As long as I live so close, I thought I should scope the place out for Wednesday's concert.  If we're going to do this thing, we might as well do it right!  I'm sure I looked quite like a lunatic peering in the doors of the arena (most were locked), but it was worth it and valuable information was gained.

The rest of the day was unfortunately spent causing great angst in the lives of some friends and family (sorry, Eddi!), as we have ONE extra ticket to Wednesday night's concert...a wonderful thing except adult responsibilities get in the way of all sorts of fun.  This barrier racing thing is not compatible with holding down a real job apparently :-(

    Wondering What To Do?

If you're just sitting around with 37 minutes of free time on your hands, might I suggest that you spend it watching this...

Don't have 37 spare minutes in your day?  Watch it while you work out, like I did.  It'll make your workout fly by...trust me!

Only have a few minutes?  Just listen to a song...or two...

As I told Molly, it's freakishly good!!

    Exercise Just Got More Fun

I created a new playlist for working out to.  Not only does the time go by so much faster, I have a silly grin on my face the whole time!

    August

I shutter to even acknowledge that it is already August.  For some reason, this month always brings me a certain restlessness.  I don't want summer to end.  I don't feel prepared for the school year to start again.  I want to continue with the "lazy" days of summer!

Yesterday I was describing it as boredom, but really it's restlessness.  Either way, I'm unsettled.  Just thought you all should know.  That way if I do something "rash" you'll know why!  Here's my favorite "I'm feeling restless" song for your (or actually my) enjoyment....

GAH!  Four weeks from tomorrow I will hear this song live (Lord willing) for the first time!

    My Brush With Fame

Otherwise titled "They May Not Know My Name, But They Know My Friends and They Know Our Moniker."(well, kind of at least)

Interesting night last night was...but first, a little story....

You all know I will soon be trekking down to Oklahoma to see Mumford & Sons perform.  What you don't know is that I am meeting up with some dear, dear friends there.  Dear friends I have never met in person, but with whom I have skyped, talked on the phone, emailed, exchanged many laughs, gifts, etc.    I met this lovely bunch of ladies on the Mumford & Sons fan forum.  We're an "older" crowd, so we made our own little subgroup on the forum (meaning we're the fans that don't want to marry one of the band members, we'd rather mother them).  Our little group of eight is pretty tight knit.  Four of these lovely ladies have already met in person and done that concert thing.

    Here's the story...

Last year, four of my Mumford friends (we call ourselves the Sisters of the Road - SOTR) went to Nashville to see a few Mumford & Sons concerts.  While hanging out in Nashville they happened to have a few conversations with "the boys."  During those conversations, it came out that my friends had met through the band's fan forum - this surprised and pleased the members of the band GREATLY.

Fast forward to last night.  What should my friend Donna put out on Facebook, but a little clip from a recent Q magazine article....

Apparently, even a year later, Marcus remembered talking to Donna and what she shared about our little group (even if he got the name our group wrong).  If you want to read Donna's first hand account of all this, you can find it here.

As excited as I am for the concert in Guthrie, I am even more excited to finally meet, face-to-face, these wonderful ladies who are my Sisters of the Road!!  I am absolutely CERTAIN I will come back with stories to tell!

    A Perfect Day

For a little Bastille. In celebration of their album being released in the US on September 3.  Go preorder it now!

    Friday Fotos

     It was a good week.
