This is not a political blog. This is not an "issues" blog. This is just MY blog. There is a blog I follow entitled "I Write What I Like." I like that! I write what I like, as well!
Today, I am going to share two true stories. I am not going to tell you what to think about these stories. That's up to you. I just spent an hour trying to teach high school biology students how to think for themselves and not just regurgitate facts. I'm assuming that my blog readers are at least as capable as my high school science students in this matter.
The first story begins a little over eighteen years ago....
I was married and had a two year old son. We wanted to have a second child. I became pregnant in June, 1995 but suffered a miscarriage seven weeks into the pregnancy. Another pregnancy followed that fall, but it quickly ended in miscarriage, as well. We were grief stricken. Would we ever be able to carry another child to term? We just didn't know. The doctors, though compassionate, were unable to give an answer to the "whys" or "what ifs" beyond giving us statistical data.
We started talking about adoption. It had always been our plan to adopt, but we thought we would have our biological kids first and then adopt. Still hoping for a successful pregnancy, we didn't start the adoption process.
In January, 1996, I found myself pregnant yet again. I was scared spitless! I went in to my doctor's appointment at nine weeks gestation and held my breath while they tried to find the baby's heartbeat....there it was! The beating of a little heart. That heartbeat brought my chance of miscarriage down significantly. I was due in September.
Three weeks later, I went in for an ultrasound, which my doctor agreed to do to calm my nerves about the pregnancy. As I lay there on the table, the nurse looked and looked for that heartbeat, but it wasn't there. Sometime between nine weeks and twelve weeks my baby had died. I declined the offer to do a D & C, and opted to let my body take care of "getting rid of the baby" on its own.
This is when I was given a most wonderful gift from my heavenly Father.
About a week or two later, I finally miscarried my baby. Only this wasn't a "normal" miscarriage in one sense. Although the baby had been dead for a time before it came out, the amniotic sac had remained intact. Because of this, my baby had not started to deteriorate, but remained intact as well. My miscarriage began with my "water breaking" and I "delivered" a very teeny, tiny baby. God allowed me to hold my little, itty bitty baby in the palm of my hand and marvel at the little arms and legs. It clearly was a little baby - maybe an inch long.
That's my story.
Unbeknownst to me, another story was happening at the same time as mine. It also involved a pregnancy. A young, single woman found out she was pregnant. She made the brave, gut-wrenching decision to carry her baby to term and place it up for adoption. Her situation was definitely not ideal. Her baby was born seven weeks premature in September of 1996, the same month my baby had been due. She followed through with her adoption plan, and we were blessed with our first daughter.

Beware!
It's been awhile since I've put on my dissatisfied customer hat, but I have to pull it out of storage for this one!
Here's he deal -
We bought a Groupon deal for a furnace inspection and maintenance from Uptown Heating. We weren't having any issues with our furnace, but we had never had it serviced and thought it might be a good idea. The technician arrived on time and started the inspection (which I could not stick around and watch since I have other responsibilities).
It wasn't long before he sought me out and told me that we had a cracked heat exchanger, we needed a new furnace, and he could not restart our furnace because it could be leaking CO2 into our house. He offered to call someone to have them come out and talk to me about buying a new furnace. I politely declined his offer and told him I would find someone myself. He promptly left - without maintenancing anything, I might add. I turned the furnace back on (it was 10 degrees out).
He was a very nice young man, and I chatted with him as he walked to the door. Now, what I didn't tell the man was that we have had two different people look at our furnace in the past four months (not service it, but look at it to decide if it was sufficient to heat our addition), and neither of them expressed any concerns over our furnace. Chris wanted to talk to the people at Uptown Heating when he got home, to find out why nothing was written up to explain what was found. When he called the company, the women he spoke to said, "Our technician told me that your wife kicked him out when she found out you needed a new furnace."
Well, then! When Chris told me that I was livid! I really don't appreciate being slandered and lied about...just a little quirk that I have! Anyway, after I calmed down, I decided to give Janelle at Uptown Heating a call because I thought she should know that her fellow employee is a boldface liar. Janelle didn't answer the phone, so I left a VERY sweet little message with my name and phone number requesting a call back (I'm not being sarcastic here either, it was a very pleasant message). Never heard back from her. No big surprise there. We also have not received the written statement from them of the "problems" that they "found."
The plot thickens...
We decided we better get our furnace checked out by someone we know we can trust, just in case the furnace really was unsafe. We called the HVAC contractor who did our addition work and had him come over and check the furnace. Guess what...it's fine!
So, the long and short of it is, buyer beware, and stay away from Groupon deals for Uptown Heating!
Btw, I'm more miffed about him lying about me than lying about my furnace!

Coach is Not First Class
Once again, I must come to my blog to draw attention to a company whose customer service is sub-par. Surprisingly, today's poor service company is Coach, as in the handbag company.
Here's the story:
My sister owns a Coach bag (a gift from her very sweet husband). She has had it a few years and the zipper has separated - as in, it doesn't stay shut. Counting on Coach being a company that stands behind their product (like other companies mentioned here and here), Deb brought the bag into the Coach store and told them of the problem. They took the bag and $20 and said they would send it in to get the zipper fixed.
All sounded like it was going well, but it was not so. When Deb got the bag back (supposedly fixed), she opened and closed the zipper twice and the same problem occurred. Deb went back into the Coach store, retold them of the problem and they sent the purse back to Coach once again. This time, she received the broken purse back with a note saying that it could not be fixed, and a 40% off your next Coach purse coupon. What?? They can't fix their own purse! Really?
To make a really long and painful story short, after talking to several customer service reps (who were polite, but unhelpful) and one customer service supervisor (who was condescending and not helpful), Coach refused to either fix or replace the bag.
To top it off, my sister, totally exasperated by her experience with Coach, brought her bag into a local shoe store, where the gentleman said, the zipper itself doesn't need to be replaced, just the slider. He is, right now, fixing it for about $20! So, not only did Coach fail to fix the bag, but they totally failed to even properly identify the problem.
Over refusing to make a $20 repair, Coach has lost my sister, everyone in our family, and hopefully everyone who reads this blog, as future customers. Readers, for the $198 cost of a Coach bag, you can buy SIX $30 bags. They may not last as long, but combined they'll last longer than the Coach did!
The moral of the story is don't "fly" Coach if you're looking for first-class service!
