Statues

Our family has a weird thing about fiberglass statues that you find along the roadside.  One year, on our way to Yellowstone, we stopped at every large fiberglass statue we saw.  You would not believe how many of those things there are from Minnesota, through North Dakota and into Wyoming.  It was a hoot!

Well, our camping trip this weekend provided us with more large fiberglass things to ponder.  We made a brief trip to Bemidji for the primary purpose of visiting Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox.

An unexpected and hysterical surprise was this lovely statue in the town of Menahga, Minnesota

Driving by at 50 mph, I couldn't figure out what exactly this statue was, or more specifically, what this gentleman had skewered on the end of his pitchfork, but I laughed about it for several miles.  If we weren't already late in getting to the campground, I would have stopped to find out.  You can be certain that when we got home though, I googled the statue and found out that it was St. Urho!  Of course, I should have known that!  Yes, that's a giant grasshopper he killed.  Way to go, Urho!

  3. St. Urho's Day is celebrated the day before St. Patrick's Day and you wear purple! One of Ted's favorite "holidays" celebrated with the kids when they were younger.

  4. Btw, Rebekah reminded me the other day we have picture of her sitting in her infant seat at the feet of St. Urho. Will show it to you next time we are together.
