A Little Culture

Every once in awhile, I like to spice up the blog with a little cultural experience, so today I give you..

My Heart's in the Highlands
by Robert Burns (1759-1796)

Farewell to the Highlands, farewell to the North,
The birth-place of Valour, the country of Worth;
Wherever I wander, wherever I rove,
The hills of the Highlands for ever I love.

My heart's in the Highlands, my heart is not here;
My heart's in the Highlands a-chasing the deer;
A-chasing the wild-deer, and following the roe,
My heart's in the Highlands wherever I go.

Farewell to the mountains high covered with snow;
Farewell to the straths and green valleys below;
Farewell to the forests and wild-hanging woods;
Farewell to the torrents and loud-pouring floods.

My heart's in the Highlands, my heart is not here;
My heart's in the Highlands a-chasing the deer;
A-chasing the wild-deer, and following the roe,
My heart's in the Highlands wherever I go.

Still trying to figure out how rove and love rhyme (or woods and floods and North and Worth, for that matter), but that's beside the point!

I've never been to the Highlands.  Tried to get there twice, the first time, when I was pregnant with Evan.  We only got as far as Birmingham (from London), so we were a long way from the Highlands.  We had to cut our trip short due to concerns about the pregnancy.

The second time was when I was in Glasgow for the World Pipe Band Championship.  I wanted to get up there so badly, since then I was really quite close, but.....alas, I didn't really have the time with the band commitments and all.  So, although I have yet to get to the Highlands, my heart really is still there.  Maybe I will make it yet someday!

Okay, maybe all these words really do rhyme if I speak with a Scottish accent....
